In Hanover there are also many cinemas which offer a very different programme. Here is an overview of the most important cinemas.

The Cinemaxx in the Nicolaistraße is the oldest one of both Cinemaxx multiplex cinemas in Hanover. It consists of 10 cinema auditoriums with modern equipment. You´ll find all mainstream films on the programme. Occasionally some special events are held.

You can book the tickets on the internet. All the tickets have a fixed seat. There are special prices for students: Monday to Thursday 5,50 € and Friday to Sunday 6,50 €.

How to get there: It takes about 10 minutes to walk from Hanover central station. When you leave the main station by the exit to the city centre, turn to the right and follow the street where there are also the rails of the tram (S-Bahn). After ca. 200m you get to a traffic light. That is where you have to turn to the right into the “Herschelstraße”. Follow the street about 400m to the next traffic light. From there you can see the cinema on the other side of the street.

This is technically the most advanced cinema centre in Hanover with excellent picture and audio technology. There are 10 cinema auditoriums where all mainstream films are shown. Some of the showings are even offered in the original language (mostly in English).

You can book the tickets for this cinema also on the internet and pick them up at the ticket counter at least 20 minutes before the film starts. All the tickets have a fixed seat.

Tip: Every Wednesday at 8.30 pm a Sneak Preview takes place in the biggest cinema auditorium. It means that you will go into a cinema auditorium but you don’t know which film you will see. In all cases it is a film that hasn’t been shown in Germany yet. For the Sneak Preview there are no fixed seats. The tickets cost 4,50 € and are valid for all seats. Before every Sneak Preview there is a lottery where you can win a price if you answer some questions about the film correctly.

How to get there: The cinema centre is situated directly at the central station. If you take the exit to the “Raschplatz” square (opposite side of the city centre) you’ll find the cinema on the right side of the square.

This is probably the most exceptional cinema of the world. Take a seat in the highest cinema of Germany. It lies in the dome of a former planetarium on the 9th floor of the “Anzeiger” multi-storey building.

In this cinema there is only one cinema auditorium, but you will still find a good range of films there. You shouldn’t miss out on this cinema if you want to experience something different than a sterile multiplex cinema

You can book the tickets by phone on 0511 14454. The seats are not fixed.

How to get there: The cinema is about 5 to 10 minutes walk from the central station. When you leave the main station by the exit to the city centre, turn to the right and follow the street where there are also the rails of the tram (S-Bahn). In about 5 minutes you get to a big crossroad. Directly on the opposite side of the street there is the “Anzeiger” multi-storey building with its big green dome on the roof where you can find the cinema.

Kino im Künstlerhaus externer Link (Kommunales Kino)

The “Kino im Künstlerhaus” (Artists’ house) shows mainly artistic or alternative films that are normally not shown in other cinemas. Often there are older classics or foreign films on the programme. Frequently there are series of topics with many films about the same theme, the same director or the same country. Almost every evening different films are shown. That is why the programme is very interesting and diverse. It’s definitely worth it to have a look at the programme.

There is only one cinema auditorium where the seats are not fixed. You can book the tickets by calling 0511/16845522

Tip: There is a student discount!

How to get there: About 5 to 10 minutes walk from Hanover central station. First you have to go to the opera square (Opernplatz). When you are at the front of the opera house, you have to turn to the right into the “Sophienstraße” (you will walk past the Dresdner Bank). After about 50 metres there is the cinema on the left side.

Apollo Studio externer Link

Apollo studio is one of the last district cinemas in Germany with a unique programme. An incomparable mix of current, classical and sophisticated films with low entrance fees between 2 € and 6 € is shown. There are also movie nights, director’s visits, readings etc.

The tickets can only be booked daily from 5.30 pm by calling 0511 / 452438. The ticket office opens 30 minutes before the showing.

How to get there: The cinema is quite far away from the central station. To get there take the underground from the central station. It is very easy: you have to take the tube no.10, direction to “Ahlem”.
